Connection is key…
We — Black and Brown people — are deeply connected. One of our strongest, most ancient connections is our oldest ancestor: the earth. Despite this truth, Black and Brown communities in New Orleans lack permanent safe spaces to rest, play, and create in harmony with the earth. An important part of our work in the upcoming year will be to establish a permanent physical location where we can remember our shared culture, reconnect to the land, build coalitions, and manifest new futures for our Black and Brown communities.
To get there, we are initiating a $5.8M capital campaign: We Are The Harvest.
We are raising funds to establish a Black and Brown space for…
Retreats & Residencies:
Culture-bearers and community members will be able to create, innovate, and practice traditions. Focus areas will be: language and remembering; New Orleans culture and its; global roots; culturally relevant youth development; and more.
Food & Farming:
We will operate a community farm, where participants will remember how to be in alignment with the land and grow their own food. We will regain ownership of our land and to use it in ways that most benefit our community.
Community Organizing:
The land will serve as the headquarters for OVNV’s organizing activities. We will be deepening our organizing practices with cultural remembering approaches to building and provoking power.
