Our Work
GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING
We organize parents to increase educational outcomes and equity for students in New Orleans and Louisiana. From working car lines, to conducting parent one-on-one meetings, we set out to build authentic relationships in communities, learn about the obstacles they face, and devise solutions to provide a better education for all students. At OVNV, we do not set an agenda that parents adopt. Instead, our Parent Leaders set their own agenda for their communities, students, and schools.
PARENT CHAMPION CIRCLES
One of the ways we build parent capacity to create change is through our Parent Champion Circles. These six-week training courses teach parents the structure of their education system, how to use data, and basic organizing principles. At the end of their six-weeks, our parents graduate and we host a ceremony to celebrate their hard work. After each circle, parents continue to develop their leadership by launching their own campaigns around improving education.
PARTNERSHIPS WITH EDUCATORS
Through creating strong partnerships with schools, we work together to improve education and provide access for our parents. In addition to organizing parents, we also have a strong teacher organizing base. Our teacher working groups identify issues affecting education outcome from their own perspective. They also collaborate with parent leaders in executing organizing campaigns.
CAMPAIGNS
We organize and train parents so that they can take action and create change. Our parent led campaigns are built around actions that make parents’ voices heard. Action is the lifeblood of any movement!

Building Space For Culture And Identity
As an organization, we don’t just embrace identity and culture, we celebrate them. We work to create events and actions to celebrate cultures and create a space for them in the New Orleans area. We do not just fight for education, but fight to protect our member’s and staffs’ cultures!
